Types of Perfection in Horary Astrology #
What Perfection Means #
In horary astrology, perfection describes the completion of an aspect between the two primary significators. When the significator of the querent and the significator of the quesited (the person or matter asked about) complete an aspect, the matter is said to “perfect” – it reaches a conclusion. The type of perfection indicates not just whether the matter succeeds but how and through what means.
Direct Perfection #
Direct perfection occurs when the two significators are applying to each other by aspect without intervention from any other planet. This is the simplest and most straightforward form of completion – the parties involved resolve the matter directly, through their own initiative, without the need for outside assistance. The aspect type (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition) describes the quality of the resolution: easy, difficult, or mixed.
Translation of Light #
Translation occurs when a third, faster planet separates from one significator and applies to the other, carrying the “light” between them. This describes an intermediary – a person, circumstance, or communication that connects the parties indirectly. The translating planet’s condition and house rulership identify the nature and quality of the intermediary.
Collection of Light #
Collection occurs when a third, slower planet receives applying aspects from both significators. An authority figure, institution, or established situation draws both parties together. The collecting planet’s dignity and condition describe whether the authority figure is capable and willing to facilitate the outcome.
Mutual Application #
Mutual application occurs when both significators are applying to each other simultaneously – one direct and one retrograde, or both moving toward the aspect from different directions. This describes a situation where both parties are actively pursuing the outcome, each moving toward the other. It is generally considered a strong indicator of success.
Why the Type Matters #
Identifying the type of perfection tells the astrologer not just whether the matter will succeed but what the process of success will look like. Direct perfection suggests the parties can handle it themselves. Translation suggests they need a go-between. Collection suggests an authority will determine the outcome.
