Prohibition and Refranation in Horary Astrology #
What These Concepts Describe #
Prohibition and refranation are two traditional mechanisms by which an applying aspect between significators fails to perfect – meaning the expected outcome does not materialize despite initial promise. They are among the most important analytical tools in horary practice, explaining why situations that look favorable on the surface may ultimately fail to produce results.
Prohibition #
Prohibition occurs when two significators are applying to an aspect (indicating that the matter is moving toward completion), but a third, faster planet intervenes by completing an aspect with one of the significators before the original aspect can perfect. The intervening planet effectively blocks the connection, like a person stepping between two people about to shake hands.
In practical terms, prohibition describes the arrival of an outside factor that prevents the outcome. If the querent asks “Will I get this job?” and the significators are applying to a conjunction but a faster planet prohibits it, the interpretation suggests that an unforeseen circumstance or competitor will intervene.
Refranation #
Refranation occurs when one of the applying significators turns retrograde before the aspect can perfect. The planet literally turns away from the connection, indicating that one of the parties involved changes their mind, withdraws, or loses interest before the matter can be completed.
This describes a fundamentally different kind of failure: not interference from outside but a change of direction from within. One party pulls back before completion.
Practical Application #
Identifying prohibition and refranation is essential for accurate horary judgment. A chart may initially appear positive – significators applying, good reception, favorable dignities – but if prohibition or refranation is present, the promising indicators will not produce the expected result. Checking for these conditions before issuing a judgment prevents the astrologer from delivering false optimism based on incomplete analysis.
