Reception and Mutual Reception in Horary #

What Reception Means in Horary #

Reception in horary astrology describes whether one significator has a genuine interest in helping the other, based on dignity relationships. When Planet A occupies a sign ruled by Planet B, then B “receives” A – B has a vested interest in A’s welfare and is willing to assist. Without reception, an aspect between significators may describe a geometric connection but not a genuine willingness to cooperate.

Why Reception Matters for Judgment #

In horary, reception often determines whether a geometrically promising aspect actually produces a practical result. Two significators may be applying to a trine – suggesting an easy, flowing outcome – but if neither planet receives the other, the ease of the aspect geometry does not translate into genuine mutual effort. The matter may technically complete but produce unsatisfying results.

Conversely, a square or opposition between significators in mutual reception describes a situation with genuine friction but also genuine willingness on both sides to make it work. The difficulty exists, but both parties are invested in overcoming it. These aspects often produce outcomes that succeed despite the challenges involved.

Types of Reception #

Domicile reception (strongest): The received planet is in the receiver’s sign. Full responsibility and genuine interest.

Exaltation reception: The received planet is honored and elevated by the receiver.

Triplicity, term, and face reception (progressively weaker): Lesser but still meaningful degrees of interest and willingness to help.

Negative reception: A planet in another’s detriment or fall is received with active antipathy. The receiving planet works against the received planet’s interests.

Mutual Reception #

Mutual reception occurs when both planets are in each other’s dignities simultaneously. This creates a reciprocal relationship that significantly strengthens the likelihood of a positive outcome, as both significators genuinely want the matter to succeed. In practical horary judgment, mutual reception between significators is one of the strongest indicators of a favorable result.
