Traditional vs. Modern Horary Approaches #

The Core Distinction #

The difference between traditional and modern horary approaches centers on how strictly the practitioner adheres to classical rules of judgment. Traditional horary follows the methods codified by authors like William Lilly, Bonatti, and Abu Ma’shar, using a defined set of techniques applied in a specific order. Modern horary adapts these methods by incorporating outer planets, psychological interpretation, and more flexible rules of judgment.

Significator Assignment #

Traditional horary assigns significators strictly through house rulership: the querent is represented by the ruler of the Ascendant, and the person or matter asked about is represented by the ruler of the relevant house. Modern practitioners may additionally consider planets naturally associated with the topic (Neptune for confusion, Pluto for transformation) or planets conjunct house cusps regardless of rulership.

Outer Planets #

Traditional horary uses only the seven visible planets. Mars rules both Aries and Scorpio, Saturn rules both Capricorn and Aquarius, and Jupiter rules both Sagittarius and Pisces. Modern horary practitioners often include Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto as co-rulers or supplementary significators, adding interpretive layers that traditional practice does not employ.

Aspects and Orbs #

Traditional horary typically uses only the five Ptolemaic aspects (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition) and assigns orbs based on the planets’ orbs of influence rather than the aspect type. Modern horary may include minor aspects (semi-sextile, quincunx, semi-square) and use fixed orbs for each aspect type regardless of the planets involved.

Choosing an Approach #

Neither approach is inherently superior. Traditional horary tends to produce clearer yes-or-no judgments through its more restrictive methodology. Modern horary provides more psychological nuance and contextual depth but can produce more ambiguous outcomes. Many experienced practitioners use a traditional framework as their foundation while selectively incorporating modern elements when the chart warrants additional exploration.
