686 articles 1 direct 40 sections

Natal chart interpretation and transit tracking form the core of most astrological practice, but the field extends far beyond personal horoscopy. Specialized branches apply astrological principles to specific domains -- from choosing the best moment to launch a project (electional astrology), to answering a focused question with a chart cast for the moment it is asked (horary), to mapping your natal chart onto the globe to explore how different locations activate different planetary lines (astrocartography).

Mundane astrology examines the charts of nations, inaugurations, and world events. Medical astrology -- handled here in its historical and symbolic dimensions only -- traces a lineage back to Hippocrates. Astrocartography, one of the newest branches, has become increasingly popular as remote work and international mobility make relocation a live question for many people.

This section provides introductions, technique guides, and worked examples for each specialized field. Whether you are drawn to the detective-story precision of horary or the geographical sweep of astrocartography, these articles will give you a solid foundation and clear pointers for further study.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is horary astrology?
Horary astrology casts a chart for the exact moment a specific question is asked and uses that chart to find an answer. It is one of the oldest branches of the tradition and operates by strict rules: the querent (person asking) is represented by the Ascendant ruler, the object of the question by the house ruler relevant to the topic, and the aspects between them describe whether and how the matter resolves.
How does astrocartography work?
Astrocartography projects your natal planetary positions onto a world map, drawing lines where each planet would be angular (on the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven, or IC) at the moment of your birth. Living near or traveling to one of these lines is said to activate that planet's themes strongly. The technique is used for relocation analysis, travel planning, and understanding why certain places feel particularly resonant or challenging.
Do I need a strong foundation in natal astrology before studying specialized branches?
A working knowledge of planets, signs, houses, and aspects is essential for all branches. Beyond that, each specialty has its own rules and methods. Horary and electional astrology, for example, rely heavily on traditional technique (essential dignities, receptions, planetary hours), so some grounding in the Traditional Techniques section will serve you well.
