Horary: Will They Come Back? #
Setting Up the Chart #
Return questions use the first house ruler as the querent’s significator and the ruler of the house representing the absent person – seventh house for a partner, fifth house for a lover or child, third house for a sibling, and so on. The central question is whether the absent person’s significator is moving toward or away from the querent’s significator.
The Role of Retrograde Motion #
Retrograde motion of the absent person’s significator is one of the strongest indicators of return. A retrograde planet is literally “coming back” – turning around and retracing its steps. If the absent person’s significator is retrograde and applying to the querent’s significator, the chart strongly suggests the person will return. If the significator is direct and moving away, the person is continuing to move away from the querent.
Reception and Desire #
Even with retrograde motion, the reception between significators matters. If the absent person’s significator has reception toward the querent’s significator (placed in the querent’s dignity), the desire to return is genuine. Without reception, the return may be circumstantial rather than motivated by genuine interest – the person may come back but not with the emotional investment the querent hopes for.
The Moon’s Narrative #
The Moon’s separating aspects describe what has already happened – typically the circumstances of the departure. The applying aspects describe what will happen next. The Moon applying to the absent person’s significator can describe contact or communication even if the primary significators are not in aspect.
The Moon’s condition in the chart also describes the emotional tone of the situation. A well-dignified Moon suggests that the querent, despite the current separation, is coping from a position of relative clarity. A debilitated or afflicted Moon may indicate heightened anxiety, confusion, or distorted expectations that could affect the querent’s ability to accurately assess the situation.
Timing and Conditions of Return #
When the chart indicates a return, the degrees between the applying significators provide timing clues. Cardinal signs and angular houses tend toward faster resolutions – days or weeks – while fixed signs and succedent houses suggest longer time frames. Mutable signs and cadent houses typically fall in between. If the absent person’s significator is retrograde but has not yet reached the exact aspect, the number of degrees before perfection describes the waiting period before the return materializes.
The nature of the perfecting aspect describes the conditions of the return. A trine suggests a smooth, voluntary return with relatively little difficulty. A square suggests the person comes back but the circumstances are challenging or the reunion involves tension. A conjunction can indicate a complete reunification, but its quality depends on the dignity and reception of both planets involved.
Practical Considerations #
These questions benefit from careful assessment of what “coming back” means in context. Physical return, emotional reconnection, and formal reconciliation may each show differently in the chart. The astrologer should clarify the querent’s specific hope to provide the most useful interpretation.
Translation of light by a third planet can also facilitate the return. If a faster planet separates from the absent person’s significator and applies to the querent’s, an intermediary – a mutual friend, a message, or a shared circumstance – may be the catalyst that brings the person back. Collection of light, where both significators apply to a heavier planet, suggests that an external factor or institution draws both parties together rather than either one initiating contact directly.
The fourth house, representing endings and final outcomes, provides supplementary testimony about where the matter ultimately settles. A well-placed fourth house ruler suggests the situation resolves in a way the querent finds satisfactory, while a debilitated fourth house ruler may indicate an unsatisfying conclusion regardless of whether the person physically returns.
