Horary: Will They Come Back? #
Setting Up the Chart #
Return questions use the first house ruler as the querent’s significator and the ruler of the house representing the absent person – seventh house for a partner, fifth house for a lover or child, third house for a sibling, and so on. The central question is whether the absent person’s significator is moving toward or away from the querent’s significator.
The Role of Retrograde Motion #
Retrograde motion of the absent person’s significator is one of the strongest indicators of return. A retrograde planet is literally “coming back” – turning around and retracing its steps. If the absent person’s significator is retrograde and applying to the querent’s significator, the chart strongly suggests the person will return. If the significator is direct and moving away, the person is continuing to move away from the querent.
Reception and Desire #
Even with retrograde motion, the reception between significators matters. If the absent person’s significator has reception toward the querent’s significator (placed in the querent’s dignity), the desire to return is genuine. Without reception, the return may be circumstantial rather than motivated by genuine interest – the person may come back but not with the emotional investment the querent hopes for.
The Moon’s Narrative #
The Moon’s separating aspects describe what has already happened – typically the circumstances of the departure. The applying aspects describe what will happen next. The Moon applying to the absent person’s significator can describe contact or communication even if the primary significators are not in aspect.
Practical Considerations #
These questions benefit from careful assessment of what “coming back” means in context. Physical return, emotional reconnection, and formal reconciliation may each show differently in the chart. The astrologer should clarify the querent’s specific hope to provide the most useful interpretation.
