Horary: Where Is the Lost Person? #

Setting Up the Chart #

Missing person questions identify the lost individual through the appropriate house – seventh house for a partner, fifth house for a child, third house for a sibling, fourth house for a parent, and so on. The ruler of that house becomes the missing person’s significator. The querent is represented by the first house ruler, and the question involves both the person’s location and the likelihood of recovery.

Determining Location #

The missing person’s significator provides location clues through both its sign and house placement. The sign indicates the type of environment: fire signs suggest warm, dry places or areas with fire/heat; earth signs suggest low-lying, agricultural, or enclosed ground-level spaces; air signs suggest elevated positions, upper floors, or open, airy locations; water signs suggest areas near water, bathrooms, or low damp places.

The house placement of the significator indicates the general direction and distance. Angular houses suggest the person is nearby and findable. Succedent houses suggest a moderate distance. Cadent houses suggest the person is far away or difficult to locate.

Traditional directional associations refine the location further. The sign’s triplicity provides compass bearings: fire signs correspond to east, earth signs to south, air signs to west, and water signs to north. When combined with the house placement, these directional cues allow the astrologer to construct a more specific geographic profile. For instance, a significator in an earth sign and an angular house might suggest the person is nearby, in a southerly direction, in a low-lying or enclosed space.

The speed of the significator also contributes to the analysis. A fast-moving planet suggests the person is on the move and may not remain in one place for long, while a slow-moving or stationary planet suggests they have settled into a fixed location. A retrograde significator may indicate the person is retracing their steps or heading back toward a familiar place.

Condition of the Person #

The dignity and aspectual condition of the missing person’s significator describe their current state. A well-dignified significator in an angular house suggests the person is safe and accessible. A debilitated significator, especially one afflicted by a traditional difficult planet, may indicate the person is in distress or danger.

The Moon’s condition adds supplementary testimony about the person’s immediate circumstances and emotional state.

Will They Be Found? #

An applying aspect between the querent’s significator and the missing person’s significator indicates that contact will be reestablished. The aspect type describes the quality of the reunion – a trine suggests a smooth recovery, a square suggests finding the person but under difficult circumstances.

No applying aspect, especially combined with the missing person’s significator cadent and debilitated, is a more concerning indicator.

Translation of light by a third planet can also facilitate recovery. If a faster planet separates from one significator and applies to the other, an intermediary – such as a friend, authority figure, or piece of information – may be what connects the querent to the missing person. Collection of light, where both significators apply to a slower planet, suggests that a third party or institution brings the two together.

Timing and Practical Application #

When the chart indicates recovery, the number of degrees between the applying significators provides timing information. The sign and house modality determine the time unit: cardinal signs and angular houses tend toward shorter intervals (days or hours), while mutable signs and cadent houses suggest longer periods (weeks or months). Fixed signs and succedent houses fall in between.

Practitioners should also note the Part of Fortune and its dispositor, as these can offer supplementary clues about the circumstances of the recovery. The fourth house, which represents the conclusion of any matter, provides additional testimony about the final outcome – a well-placed fourth house ruler suggests the matter resolves favorably.
