Annual Profections by Age: A Quick Reference Guide #

Overview

Annual Profections follow a simple, elegant cycle: starting from the Ascendant at birth, the focus of the year advances one house for each year of life, completing a full cycle every twelve years. The planet ruling the sign on the profected house becomes the Lord of the Year, the planet whose transits and natal condition shape the year’s central developmental themes.

This guide provides a complete reference for determining which house is activated at any given age. Because the cycle repeats every twelve years, the same house themes return at regular intervals, but the individual meets those themes at different stages of maturity each time. A fourth house year at age 15 engages very different life circumstances than a fourth house year at age 51, even though the underlying archetypal curriculum is the same.

To use this guide, find your current age (measured from your most recent birthday to your next) and identify the corresponding house. Then look at the sign on that house cusp in your natal chart. The planet ruling that sign is your Profection Lord for the year, and its natal condition and transits provide the year’s primary timing framework.

How to Find Your Profection Year #

The calculation is straightforward: divide your current age by 12 and note the remainder. The remainder corresponds to the profected house (with a remainder of 0 indicating a first house year). Alternatively, simply count forward from the first house, advancing one house per year of age.

Your profection year begins on your birthday and runs until your next birthday. If you are 30, for instance, you divide 30 by 12, which gives a remainder of 6. Counting from the first house, the seventh house is active. The sign on your seventh house cusp determines the Profection Lord.

The sign system matters: you need to know which sign occupies each house in your natal chart, using the whole sign house system (the traditional method) or your preferred house system. In whole sign houses, each sign occupies one complete house, making the identification straightforward.

The Twelve-Year Cycle #

Each house in the profection cycle brings its own archetypal themes to the foreground. Here is a brief summary of each house’s focus:

First House — Identity, self-definition, personal presence, and new beginnings. The start of a new twelve-year cycle.

Second House — Resources, self-worth, material security, and the relationship with what you have and what you need.

Third House — Communication, learning, siblings and peers, everyday exchanges, and the quality of your mental engagement.

Fourth House — Home, family, roots, emotional foundations, and the inner sense of belonging.

Fifth House — Creativity, pleasure, romance, children, and the expression of what brings you joy.

Sixth House — Daily work, routines, skill-building, adjustment, and the practical management of daily life.

Seventh House — Partnerships, one-to-one relationships, negotiation, and the experience of yourself through others.

Eighth House — Shared resources, intimacy, depth, crisis, and the transformations that arise through entanglement with others.

Ninth House — Higher education, travel, philosophy, belief systems, and the broadening of perspective.

Tenth House — Career, public role, reputation, authority, and the relationship with your place in the broader world.

Eleventh House — Community, friendships, collective goals, and the networks that connect you to a world beyond your personal sphere.

Twelfth House — Retreat, solitude, hidden matters, undoing, and the parts of experience that resist easy categorization.

Working With the Cycle #

The power of profections lies in their simplicity and their capacity to organize the complexity of astrological timing into a coherent rhythm. Rather than trying to track every transit and progression simultaneously, profections give you a single focal point for the year: one planet, one set of themes, one developmental curriculum.

Once you have identified your Profection Lord, the next step is to assess its natal condition. Look at the sign it occupies, the house it is placed in, and the aspects it forms to other planets. This natal picture gives you the baseline quality of the year. Then track transits to this planet throughout the year: these transits often mark the year’s most significant events and turning points.

The twelve-year cycle also provides a useful framework for reviewing your personal history. Looking back at previous years when the same house was activated can reveal recurring themes, developmental patterns, and the ways you have matured in your engagement with particular areas of life.

Integration #

Understanding your current profection year provides a framework for intentional engagement with the themes most active in your life. Rather than trying to work on everything simultaneously, the profection cycle suggests focusing your developmental attention on the specific area highlighted by the current house. This does not mean other areas of life cease to matter; it means that the profected house offers the year’s richest opportunities for growth and insight.

The practical application is straightforward. Identify your Profection Lord, learn about its natal condition, track its transits, and pay particular attention to the life area represented by the profected house. Let this focus inform your decisions, your reflections, and your priorities for the year.
