Age 0 Profection Year: First House #

The profection year at age 0 activates the first house — identity, bodily presence, and the initial encounter with existence. Every person begins life here: house equals (age mod 12) + 1, so at age 0 the first house opens the twelve-year cycle that profections will repeat throughout life.

This is the only first house year that carries no history. At ages 12, 24, 36, and beyond, the return to the first house involves reassessing an identity that has already taken shape. At birth, there is nothing to reassess. The year is pure initiation.

The Blueprint #

The rising sign and its ruler describe the lens through which the newborn will begin to encounter the world. The temperament that colours first impressions, the instinctive approach to new situations, the quality of physical vitality — none of this determines who the child will become, but it describes the starting conditions from which identity will be built.

The planet ruling the Ascendant sign is the profection lord for this year. Its natal placement, sign, and aspects offer a description of how the first house themes — selfhood, presence, beginning — will express themselves not only now but at every twelve-year return. A well-supported profection lord suggests that the process of entering the world and establishing a physical presence unfolds with relative ease. A more complex natal picture may indicate that the first encounters carry more tension, experienced at this age primarily through the environment rather than through conscious choice.

What the Family Experiences #

At age 0, the profection speaks not only through the child but through the relational field the child enters. First house themes often mirror in the adults’ lives: adjustments to identity (becoming a parent, becoming a sibling), reorganisation of daily life around a new presence, and a heightened awareness of how beginnings carry weight.

The environment during this year — the quality of care, the stability or instability of the household, the attentiveness of those present — shapes the foundation on which later profection cycles will build. This is not deterministic. It means the first house year at age 0 establishes the initial conditions for how identity, initiative, and self-expression will develop across the cycles that follow.

Looking Back #

Understanding the conditions of your first house profection year — what was happening in the family, the circumstances of your early environment — can offer context for patterns that the cycle revisits every twelve years. The observing, at this age, is done entirely by others. Parents, caregivers, and family members are the ones who notice the themes: a child’s emerging temperament, the way the family system reorganises itself, the tone of the first year of life.
