Local Space Astrology: Your Chart on the Compass #

Origins and Development #

The contemporary form of Local Space astrology was developed primarily by the American astrologer Michael Erlewine in the 1970s. Erlewine recognized that while astrocartography (developed around the same time by Jim Lewis) showed how your chart changed across the globe, it said nothing about direction and orientation within your immediate environment. A person might live thousands of miles from any of their astrocartography lines, yet the compass directions of their natal planets remained relevant every day.

Erlewine drew on principles that were, in a sense, ancient. Many traditional cultures oriented their homes, temples, and cities according to cardinal directions and celestial bodies. Chinese feng shui, Vastu Shastra from the Indian tradition, and various indigenous systems of spatial orientation all share the premise that the direction one faces or moves toward carries distinct qualities. Local Space astrology formalized this insight within the framework of Western natal astrology.

How Local Space Works #

The mathematical basis of Local Space is the conversion of planetary positions from the ecliptic coordinate system (zodiacal longitude and latitude) into the horizon coordinate system (azimuth and altitude). This conversion is specific to the location and time of birth, producing a unique directional map for each individual.

Azimuth is the compass bearing of a planet, measured in degrees clockwise from true north. A planet with an azimuth of 0 degrees lies due north; 90 degrees is due east; 180 degrees is due south; and 270 degrees is due west. Every planet in the natal chart has a specific azimuth, which translates into a line of direction extending from the birthplace outward across the landscape.

Altitude measures how far above or below the horizon a planet sits at the moment of birth. Planets above the horizon are visible in the sky; those below are beneath the earth. Altitude provides a secondary layer of interpretation — planets high above the horizon express more visibly, while those below may operate in less conscious or more internalized ways.

When you draw lines from the center of the birthplace outward along each planet’s azimuth, you create a Local Space chart — essentially a compass rose with planetary labels. This chart can then be overlaid onto a map of the local environment, revealing which planets govern which directions from where you stand.

Reading the Local Space Chart #

The most immediate application involves noticing which planetary directions are activated in your daily life. If your natal Mars line extends to the northeast, and your workplace lies to the northeast of your home, you may find that your professional life carries a distinctly Martian quality — competitive, energetic, assertive, or contentious. If your Venus line points southwest, and your favorite park, your partner’s home, or the neighborhood where you feel most relaxed lies in that direction, the correspondence becomes tangible.

This is not a deterministic system. Moving northeast does not compel Martian experiences. Rather, the Local Space chart suggests that each direction carries a planetary resonance that may subtly color your experience of that direction. The practical value lies in conscious orientation — choosing which directions to emphasize based on what you need.

The Home as Microcosm #

One of the most compelling applications of Local Space is within the home itself. The Local Space chart can be overlaid onto a floor plan, turning different rooms, corners, and areas into planetary zones. Where you sleep, where you work, where you eat, where you rest — each location within the home occupies a particular planetary direction.

This does not require remodeling. Simply noticing which planetary direction your desk faces, or which planet governs the direction you look when you sit in your favorite chair, can provide insight into why certain spaces in your home feel different from others. If you consistently feel energized in one part of the house and depleted in another, the Local Space chart may illuminate the planetary dynamics at work.

Some practitioners go further, recommending that clients orient their sleeping direction, workspace, or meditation area to align with specific planetary lines depending on what they are working to develop. Facing your Jupiter direction while studying, your Venus direction while socializing, or your Saturn direction while working on projects requiring discipline are examples of this approach.

Local Space and the Birthplace #

Unlike astrocartography, which changes as you move across the globe, the Local Space chart is anchored to the birthplace (or, in some practitioners’ usage, the current place of residence). The directions remain the same regardless of where you are — your natal Mars azimuth points the same compass direction whether you are standing in your childhood home or on the other side of the world. This is because the chart represents the sky’s orientation at the moment and place of birth, which is a fixed imprint.

However, what lies in each direction changes as you move. This is what makes Local Space astrology relevant to relocation — when you move to a new location, the same planetary directions point toward different cities, neighborhoods, and landscape features. The directional pattern remains constant; the geographic content shifts.

Limitations and Appropriate Use #

Local Space astrology works best as a complement to natal chart work, not as a replacement. It adds a spatial dimension to interpretation that most other techniques lack, but it does not provide the psychological depth of traditional chart analysis. Its strength is its concreteness — it turns abstract planetary symbolism into directions you can physically explore.

The system is also most meaningful within a relatively local radius. At extreme distances, the curvature of the Earth means that azimuth lines project differently than they would on a flat map, and the technique begins to overlap with the territory better served by astrocartography.
