Local Space Astrology is a complementary technique to Astrocartography that approaches locational astrology from a fundamentally different geometric perspective. While Astrocartography maps where each natal planet is angular on the globe, Local Space maps the compass directions in which each planet lies as seen from the birth location. The result is a set of lines radiating outward from the birthplace like spokes on a wheel, each line corresponding to a planet and extending in the direction where that planet sat on the local horizon at the moment of birth.
This technique does not replace Astrocartography. It answers a different question. Astrocartography asks: “Where on the globe is each planet most prominent in my chart?” Local Space asks: “In which direction from where I was born does each planetary energy extend?” The two approaches overlap in some locations and diverge in others, and using them together produces a more complete picture of how geography interacts with the natal chart.
The Principle of Local Space #
Local Space Astrology is grounded in a simple observational principle: at the moment of birth, each planet occupied a specific position not only in the zodiac but also on the local horizon. From the birthplace, each planet sat in a particular compass direction – some were to the north, some to the south, some due east, some at various azimuths in between. These compass directions, extended outward from the birth location as straight lines on the map, create the Local Space chart.
The technique treats the birthplace as the center of a personal compass. Each planetary line extends from that center toward the horizon, continuing across the globe in the direction where the planet was located. The Venus line might extend toward the northeast, the Mars line toward the southwest, and the Jupiter line almost due south. These directional lines mark geographic corridors where the corresponding planetary themes tend to be activated when the individual travels or relocates along them.
The philosophical foundation of Local Space is that the moment of birth imprints not only a temporal pattern (the natal chart as a map of time) but also a spatial pattern (the natal chart as a map of direction). Just as the natal chart suggests developmental themes that unfold over a lifetime, the Local Space chart suggests geographic orientations that carry specific archetypal significance.
How Local Space Lines Are Calculated #
The calculation of Local Space lines begins with the azimuth of each planet at the moment of birth. The azimuth is the compass bearing of the planet as measured from the birth location: zero degrees is due north, 90 degrees is due east, 180 degrees is due south, and 270 degrees is due west. Each planet’s azimuth is determined by its position in the chart relative to the local horizon at the birth time and location.

Some practitioners distinguish between above-horizon and below-horizon planets in their interpretation, giving slightly different weight to each, but the fundamental principle – that each planet defines a directional axis from the birthplace – applies to all natal planets.
Most locational astrology software includes the option to generate Local Space lines alongside or overlaid upon the standard Astrocartography map. This overlay allows the practitioner to see where the two systems converge and where they diverge, providing a more layered understanding of any specific location’s significance.
Local Space vs. Astrocartography #
The two techniques answer different questions and produce different maps, but they are most powerful when used together.
Astrocartography identifies where each planet is angular – where it sits on the ASC, DSC, MC, or IC for a given location. The resulting lines reflect the planet’s relationship to the angles of the chart, which are tied to the earth’s rotation and the ecliptic. Astrocartography lines curve and run in complex patterns across the map because the relationship between the ecliptic and the local horizon changes with latitude.
Local Space identifies the compass direction of each planet from the birth location. The resulting lines are simpler in form – they radiate outward from a single point – but they operate on a different principle. A Local Space line does not indicate that a planet is angular at the locations it passes through. Instead, it indicates that traveling in that direction activates the planet’s themes through the directional imprint of the birth moment.
Where the two systems converge, the effect tends to be amplified. If your Jupiter Astrocartography line and your Jupiter Local Space line both pass through the same city, that location carries Jupiter’s themes through two independent geometric frameworks, suggesting a particularly strong activation. Where the systems diverge – where your Venus Local Space line passes through a city that falls on your Saturn Astrocartography line, for example – the experience may involve a layered or complex interaction between Venusian and Saturnian themes that neither system alone would predict.
Interpreting Local Space Lines #
Interpretation of Local Space lines follows the same archetypal principles as standard astrocartography, but with an additional dimension: direction itself carries meaning.
Traveling along your Venus Local Space line means moving in the direction that Venus occupied at your birth. The experience of travel or relocation along this line tends to foreground Venusian themes: relational connection, aesthetic sensitivity, comfort, and the desire for harmony. The further you travel from the birthplace along this line, the more fully you engage with these themes in a geographic context that is progressively more distant from your origin.
The directional quality introduces a sense of journey that standard Astrocartography does not emphasize. Moving along a Local Space line is not simply arriving at a point on the map; it is following a trajectory that begins at the birthplace and extends outward, carrying the individual into progressively new territory along a specific planetary vector. This creates a narrative quality – the sense of following a particular thread of experience that unfolds along a geographic path.
Interpretation also considers where multiple Local Space lines converge or cluster. If several planetary lines extend in approximately the same direction, the region along that axis carries the combined themes of those planets. A cluster of Venus, Neptune, and Moon lines extending to the southeast, for example, would suggest that the southeast direction from the birthplace activates themes of emotional receptivity, artistic sensitivity, and relational warmth in a mutually reinforcing pattern.

Local Space Astrology has several practical applications that complement the standard use of astrocartography.
Choosing a direction for relocation. When considering a move, Local Space can help identify which general direction from the birthplace aligns with the individual’s current developmental needs. If the priority is professional development and the natal Saturn Local Space line extends to the north, a northern relocation may support the disciplined, structured engagement that Saturn requires. This is not a substitute for practical research, but it adds a symbolic dimension that can help the individual understand why certain directions feel more compelling than others.
Understanding patterns in past travel and relocation. Many individuals discover that their significant moves, travels, and relocations have followed patterns that correspond to their Local Space lines. A person who has repeatedly moved westward may find that their Jupiter or Sun Local Space line extends in that direction, suggesting an instinctive orientation toward expansion or creative self-expression that has been operating below conscious awareness.
Micro-level applications. Some practitioners apply Local Space principles at the scale of the home or office, using the directional orientation of planets to suggest which directions within a living space might support different activities. While this application is more speculative, it reflects the underlying principle that directional orientation carries archetypal significance at every scale.
Combining with Astrocartography for relocation decisions. The most practical use of Local Space is as a secondary filter when evaluating locations that have already been identified through standard Astrocartography. If two cities both sit near your Venus Astrocartography line, but only one of them lies along your Venus Local Space line as well, the convergence of both systems at that location suggests a stronger and more coherent Venusian activation.
Resources and Strengths #
The primary resource of Local Space Astrology is the additional perspective it provides on the relationship between the individual and geography. By introducing directionality as an interpretive dimension, Local Space reveals patterns that the standard Astrocartography map may not emphasize. The technique is particularly valuable for individuals who feel a persistent pull toward a specific geographic direction and want to understand that pull in astrological terms.
Local Space also provides a useful framework for understanding the overall geographic orientation of the natal chart. Some charts cluster many planetary lines in a narrow directional range, suggesting that the individual’s geographic engagement is concentrated along a specific axis. Other charts distribute their lines more evenly, suggesting a more diffuse geographic orientation. Understanding this pattern can help the individual make sense of their relationship with movement, travel, and the pull of specific directions.
The Growth Edge #
The growth edge in working with Local Space Astrology lies in the temptation to over-apply the technique to contexts where it may not be the most useful tool. Local Space works well as a complementary perspective, but it should not override the foundational information provided by the natal chart and the standard Astrocartography map. The directional lines are suggestive rather than deterministic, and their influence is generally more subtle than that of angular line placements.
There is also a risk of attributing every geographic experience to a Local Space line, creating a pattern-matching exercise that finds significance everywhere and therefore nowhere. The most productive approach treats Local Space as one interpretive layer among several, consulted after the angular lines and natal chart have been thoroughly considered. When the technique confirms or illuminates a pattern that other methods have already suggested, it adds genuine value. When it is used as the primary or sole locational tool, it may produce interpretations that are interesting but insufficiently grounded.
