Sun/Moon represents the integration of conscious will and instinctive response — the core personality. Mars/Saturn represents the combination of drive and restraint — disciplined effort or frustrated action, depending on expression. Jupiter/Neptune represents the combination of expansion and imagination — optimistic vision or inflated expectations.

Step 2: Identify the activating planet. The planet that occupies the midpoint activates the pair’s combined meaning in a specific way. Mercury activating Sun/Moon (Sun/Moon = Mercury) channels the core personality through communication. Saturn activating Sun/Moon (Sun/Moon = Saturn) structures the core personality through discipline and limitation. Pluto activating Sun/Moon (Sun/Moon = Pluto) transforms the core personality through encounters with depth and power.

Step 3: Synthesize. The interpretation combines all three elements into a concise statement. COSI typically provides several variant interpretations for each formula — a range of possible expressions from constructive to challenging.

Key Midpoint Pairs #

Certain midpoint pairs carry particular weight in cosmobiological interpretation:

Sun/Moon — the most personal midpoint, representing the integration of the masculine and feminine principles, the conscious and unconscious, will and feeling. Planets at this midpoint have a direct impact on the individual’s sense of inner wholeness and relational orientation. In synastry (chart comparison), a partner’s planet at your Sun/Moon midpoint is considered a strong indicator of relational significance.

Mars/Saturn — the “death axis” in traditional COSI terminology, though this label is misleading. More accurately, this midpoint represents the intersection of energy and limitation. Planets activating it deal with the challenge of sustained effort under constraint. It is associated with hard work, endurance, and the experience of working against resistance — which may involve physical hardship but more commonly manifests as the ordinary demands of disciplined labor.

Jupiter/Saturn — represents the balance between growth and contraction, optimism and realism. This midpoint tracks the individual’s capacity for measured expansion — growth that is sustainable because it respects limits.

Ascendant/Midheaven — when the angles are available (requiring accurate birth time), this midpoint represents the integration of personal presentation (Ascendant) and public role (Midheaven). Planets here affect how the individual’s private identity and public function interact.

The 90-Degree Dial in Practice #

The 90-degree dial is the primary visual tool for identifying midpoint structures. By compressing the 360-degree zodiac into 90 degrees, conjunctions, oppositions, and squares are all displayed as conjunctions on the dial. This simplification makes midpoint structures immediately visible — any two planets that are close together on the 90-degree dial are in midpoint-relevant relationship.

Reading a 90-degree dial involves scanning for clusters of planetary positions. One of cosmobiology’s most powerful predictive tools is the application of solar arc directions to midpoint structures. In the solar arc system, every point in the natal chart advances by the same amount each year — approximately one degree per year, adjusted for the Sun’s actual daily motion at birth.

When a solar arc-directed planet reaches a natal midpoint, the themes of that midpoint structure are activated for the year in question. This technique allows the cosmobiologist to identify specific years when particular developmental themes are likely to emerge. For example, when directed Pluto reaches the natal Sun/Moon midpoint, the year may involve a transformative experience affecting the core personality and relational orientation.

The precision of this method — using one-degree orbs and exact solar arc calculations — allows for remarkably specific timing that complements the broader rhythms tracked by transits and progressions.
