Cosmobiology Midpoint Formulas: The COSI System #
The Combination of Stellar Influences — known universally by its abbreviation COSI — is the interpretive engine of cosmobiology. Developed by Reinhold Ebertin and refined across multiple editions, COSI provides a systematic method for interpreting every possible three-planet combination formed through midpoint structures. The system works by assigning each planet a set of keywords, then combining those keywords when planets form midpoint pictures. The result is a framework that is at once comprehensive and austere — every midpoint picture has an interpretation, but each interpretation is distilled to its most essential elements.
What a Midpoint Formula Looks Like #
A midpoint formula in cosmobiology is written in a specific notation. The standard format is:
Planet A / Planet B = Planet C
This reads: “Planet C occupies the midpoint of Planet A and Planet B.” In practice, this means that Planet C sits at the zodiacal degree that is exactly (or very nearly) halfway between Planets A and B, when measured on the 90-degree dial.
For example, Sun / Moon = Mercury means that Mercury occupies the midpoint between the Sun and Moon. In COSI terms, this would be interpreted by combining the keywords of all three planets: the core identity and emotional patterns (Sun/Moon) are expressed through communication, thought, and mental agility (Mercury). A practical interpretation might be: “thinking and speaking from the center of one’s being” or “a need to articulate the integration of will and feeling.”
Building Midpoint Interpretations #
The COSI method builds interpretations through a consistent process:
Step 1: Identify the midpoint pair. Each pair of planets has a core meaning that represents the blending of their principles. Sun/Moon represents the integration of conscious will and instinctive response — the core personality. Mars/Saturn represents the combination of drive and restraint — disciplined effort or frustrated action, depending on expression. Jupiter/Neptune represents the combination of expansion and imagination — optimistic vision or inflated expectations.
Step 2: Identify the activating planet. The planet that occupies the midpoint activates the pair’s combined meaning in a specific way. Mercury activating Sun/Moon (Sun/Moon = Mercury) channels the core personality through communication. Saturn activating Sun/Moon (Sun/Moon = Saturn) structures the core personality through discipline and limitation. Pluto activating Sun/Moon (Sun/Moon = Pluto) transforms the core personality through encounters with depth and power.
Step 3: Synthesize. The interpretation combines all three elements into a concise statement. COSI typically provides several variant interpretations for each formula — a range of possible expressions from constructive to challenging.
Key Midpoint Pairs #
Certain midpoint pairs carry particular weight in cosmobiological interpretation:
Sun/Moon — the most personal midpoint, representing the integration of the masculine and feminine principles, the conscious and unconscious, will and feeling. Planets at this midpoint have a direct impact on the individual’s sense of inner wholeness and relational orientation. In synastry (chart comparison), a partner’s planet at your Sun/Moon midpoint is considered a strong indicator of relational significance.
Mars/Saturn — the “death axis” in traditional COSI terminology, though this label is misleading. More accurately, this midpoint represents the intersection of energy and limitation. Planets activating it deal with the challenge of sustained effort under constraint. It is associated with hard work, endurance, and the experience of working against resistance — which may involve physical hardship but more commonly manifests as the ordinary demands of disciplined labor.
Jupiter/Saturn — represents the balance between growth and contraction, optimism and realism. This midpoint tracks the individual’s capacity for measured expansion — growth that is sustainable because it respects limits.
Ascendant/Midheaven — when the angles are available (requiring accurate birth time), this midpoint represents the integration of personal presentation (Ascendant) and public role (Midheaven). Planets here affect how the individual’s private identity and public function interact.
The 90-Degree Dial in Practice #
The 90-degree dial is the primary visual tool for identifying midpoint structures. By compressing the 360-degree zodiac into 90 degrees, conjunctions, oppositions, and squares are all displayed as conjunctions on the dial. This simplification makes midpoint structures immediately visible — any two planets that are close together on the 90-degree dial are in midpoint-relevant relationship.
Reading a 90-degree dial involves scanning for clusters of planetary positions. Where three or more planets cluster within a narrow range of degrees on the dial, multiple midpoint pictures are simultaneously active. These clusters are particularly important — they indicate areas of the chart where several planetary dynamics converge, producing concentrated themes.
The orb used on the 90-degree dial is typically one to one-and-a-half degrees. Some practitioners extend to two degrees for midpoints involving the luminaries or angles, but the tighter the orb, the more specific the interpretation. Ebertin himself emphasized that the closest midpoint structures — those within half a degree or less — tend to be the most consistently observable in practice.
Solar Arc Directions and Midpoints #
One of cosmobiology’s most powerful predictive tools is the application of solar arc directions to midpoint structures. In the solar arc system, every point in the natal chart advances by the same amount each year — approximately one degree per year, adjusted for the Sun’s actual daily motion at birth.
When a solar arc-directed planet reaches a natal midpoint, the themes of that midpoint structure are activated for the year in question. This technique allows the cosmobiologist to identify specific years when particular developmental themes are likely to emerge. For example, when directed Pluto reaches the natal Sun/Moon midpoint, the year may involve a transformative experience affecting the core personality and relational orientation.
The precision of this method — using one-degree orbs and exact solar arc calculations — allows for remarkably specific timing that complements the broader rhythms tracked by transits and progressions.
Applying COSI to Your Own Chart #
To begin working with COSI, you will need astrological software capable of displaying a 90-degree dial and listing midpoint structures. Most professional programs include this function. Start by examining the planets at the Sun/Moon midpoint, as these tend to produce the most immediately recognizable self-descriptions. Then expand to other key midpoint pairs.
The interpretations in COSI are intentionally terse. They are meant to be starting points for reflection, not definitive statements. The practitioner’s task is to weigh the variant meanings Ebertin provides against the individual’s actual life circumstances and developmental stage.
