The result is a list of planetary combinations that all converge on a single point, revealing the hidden connections and synthesizing role that the planet plays.
For example, if Mars occupies the midpoints of Sun/Jupiter, Moon/Saturn, and Venus/Pluto, the midpoint tree for Mars would show all three combinations. This indicates that Mars mediates between identity and expansion (Sun/Jupiter), emotional needs and discipline (Moon/Saturn), and relational values and transformative depth (Venus/Pluto). The planet at the center of a rich midpoint tree plays a particularly important synthesizing role in the chart.
How to Read a Midpoint Tree #
A midpoint tree is read from the center outward. The planet at the center is the one being examined. The branches of the tree are the planet pairs whose midpoint it occupies. Each branch represents a synthesis of two energies that flows through the central planet.
The more branches a planet’s midpoint tree has, the more connected that planet is to the overall chart structure through midpoints. A planet with many midpoint connections functions as a node of integration, drawing multiple dynamics into its expression. A planet with few midpoint connections operates more independently, not because it lacks importance but because its function is less entangled with other energies through this particular mechanism.
Building a Midpoint Tree #
The construction of a midpoint tree for any planet in a chart involves a systematic process:
- Calculate all midpoints in the chart (every possible pair of planets, angles, and nodes).
- Identify which midpoints fall within orb of the planet being examined.
- List those midpoints as branches of the tree, with the examined planet at the center.
- Repeat for each planet, angle, and significant point in the chart.
Most astrological software that supports cosmobiology or midpoint analysis can generate midpoint trees automatically. The 90-degree dial, a specialized visual tool, is particularly useful for identifying midpoint contacts.
The 90-Degree Dial #
The 90-degree dial is a circular chart format that compresses the full 360-degree zodiac into 90 degrees by overlaying the cardinal, fixed, and mutable crosses on top of each other. This compression makes conjunction, opposition, and square aspects all appear as conjunctions on the dial, which is the standard approach in cosmobiology for identifying midpoint contacts.
On a 90-degree dial, when a planet appears at the midpoint of two other planets, all three will cluster together geometrically. This makes midpoint identification visual and intuitive, rather than requiring extensive calculation.
Interpreting a Full Set of Trees #
When midpoint trees have been built for all planets in a chart, several patterns become visible:
Planets with the richest trees tend to be the most psychologically important. They function as hubs where multiple dynamics converge, and their expression carries the weight of many integrated energies.
Repeated themes across multiple trees highlight dynamics that are particularly emphasized in the chart. If several midpoint connections involve Venus and Pluto, for example, the themes of relational intensity and transformation are prominently woven through the chart’s midpoint structure.
Sparsely connected planets may function more independently, expressing their energy in a less entangled but sometimes more concentrated way.
Integration: Working with Midpoint Trees #
Analysis of midpoint trees typically begins with the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant. Because these are the most personal points in a chart, their midpoint trees reveal the deepest structural connections in the personality. Planets with unusually rich trees are also significant, functioning as integrative nodes that are particularly important for understanding the chart’s overall dynamics. Finally, midpoint trees are highly useful for uncovering hidden connections, as planets that do not form traditional aspects may still be connected through midpoints.
