Mythological Background #

In Roman mythology, Proserpina (the equivalent of the Greek Persephone) was a young maiden associated with spring and innocence. She was violently abducted by Pluto (Hades) and taken to the underworld to be his bride. Her mother, Ceres (Demeter), goddess of agriculture, plunged into deep grief, causing the earth to freeze and crops to die, creating the first winter.

Eventually, a compromise was reached: because Proserpina had eaten a few pomegranate seeds in the underworld, she was bound to it. She would spend part of the year below ground as the Queen of the Underworld, and the rest of the year above ground with her mother, bringing the spring.
