Planetary Speed as a Condition of Strength #
In the traditional assessment of planetary condition, speed provides essential information about how a planet delivers its effects. While essential dignity tells us what resources a planet has, and sect tells us how environmentally supported it is, speed tells us when and how quickly those effects arrive. This article explains how fast, slow, and stationary planets differ in their expression and how to integrate speed assessment into chart interpretation.
Why Speed Matters #
In traditional astrology, a planet’s speed relative to its average daily motion is a significant condition that modifies how it functions in the birth chart. Speed is classified as an accidental dignity – it does not change what the planet is (essential dignity handles that) but rather how efficiently and quickly the planet can produce its effects. A fast planet delivers; a slow planet deliberates.
Fast Planets #
Fast planets (above average daily motion) tend to produce their effects with speed and directness. The individual experiences that planet’s themes as readily accessible and efficiently expressed. Actions taken under a fast planet’s governance tend to produce quicker results. A fast Mercury, for instance, suggests mental processing that is notably quick, communication that flows easily, and decisions that arrive without prolonged deliberation. A fast Venus suggests relational connections that form readily and creative expression that flows with natural ease.
Slow Planets #
Slow planets (below average daily motion, approaching station) tend to produce their effects with deliberation and delay. The individual may experience that planet’s themes as requiring patience, sustained effort, or extended development before results become visible. The expression is not absent but operates on a longer timeline. A slow Mars, for instance, may describe an assertive style that builds gradually rather than striking quickly – less immediately impressive but potentially more sustained and thorough in its eventual impact.
Stationary Planets #
Stationary planets (very near their station points) are considered particularly concentrated in their influence. Like a spotlight held still rather than swept across a surface, a stationary planet focuses its energy at a specific degree with unusual intensity. Traditional astrologers consider stationary planets as having heightened impact – for better or worse depending on the planet’s overall condition. A stationary Jupiter concentrates expansive energy at a single point; a stationary Saturn concentrates restrictive or structuring energy with similar intensity.
Average Daily Motion Reference #
For practical assessment, the following average daily motions provide the baseline against which speed is measured:
- Moon: approximately 13 degrees per day
- Mercury: approximately 1 degree 23 minutes per day (when direct)
- Venus: approximately 1 degree 12 minutes per day (when direct)
- Sun: approximately 59 minutes per day
- Mars: approximately 31 minutes per day
- Jupiter: approximately 5 minutes per day
- Saturn: approximately 2 minutes per day
A planet moving notably faster than these figures is considered fast. A planet moving notably slower, particularly as it approaches a station, is considered slow.
How Speed Integrates with Other Conditions #
This speed assessment adds essential nuance to dignity evaluation, explaining why two planets in similar dignity conditions may produce notably different experiences in terms of timing and ease of expression. A well-dignified but slow planet may describe a life area where the individual has genuine capability that takes years to manifest fully, while an equally dignified but fast planet describes capability that is immediately accessible and efficiently deployed.
Speed also interacts meaningfully with sect and hayz. A planet that is both in sect and fast operates at peak efficiency – its environmental support is strong and its output is rapid. A planet out of sect and slow faces the double challenge of environmental resistance and delayed expression, requiring significant patience from the individual.
