White Moon Selena: The Lunar Counterpoint to Lilith #

Overview

White Moon Selena is a calculated point used primarily in the Russian astrological tradition, where it was developed and popularized by the astrologer Pavel Globa beginning in the 1980s. Selena represents what Globa’s system calls the second focal point of the Moon’s orbit — the empty focus of the lunar ellipse, positioned opposite (or complementary) to the point known as Black Moon Lilith, which corresponds to the lunar apogee.

In this framework, Selena describes an individual’s area of natural ease, inner resourcefulness, and constructive alignment. Where Lilith reveals the psychological territory of instinctual drives, autonomy, and the material that has been excluded from conscious integration, Selena indicates the direction of least resistance toward something genuinely constructive — not effortless comfort, but a natural alignment between the individual’s instincts and their developmental direction.

Before going further, an important clarification is necessary: White Moon Selena is not universally recognized in Western astrology. It is a concept rooted in the Russian astrological school, which has its own terminology, techniques, and interpretive frameworks that differ from the Hellenistic, medieval, and modern psychological traditions dominant in English-speaking astrology. This article presents Selena as it is understood within the tradition that developed it, while being transparent about its limited adoption outside that context.

Origin and Tradition #

Pavel Globa is one of the most influential figures in Russian astrology, and his system — sometimes called the Avestan or Zoroastrian school of astrology — integrates classical planetary techniques with a cosmological framework drawn from Zoroastrian and Mazdean philosophy. Within this system, the chart is understood as a field of opposing forces: light and shadow, integration and fragmentation, constructive alignment and destructive automatism. Selena belongs to the “light” side of this framework.

It is important to understand this philosophical context because it shapes the interpretation. In Globa’s system, Selena is not simply “good” or “lucky” — concepts the guidelines of this site discourage. Rather, it represents a point of natural alignment with constructive processes — the area of life where the individual’s instincts, if followed without interference, tend to produce outcomes that support growth, connection, and the integration of experience. The emphasis is on the quality of the process, not on the guarantee of results.

Russian astrology has a substantial practitioner community and a developed body of literature, but most of this material has not been translated into English. As a result, Western astrologers who encounter Selena often lack access to the original interpretive context and may misunderstand or oversimplify the concept. The treatment in this article draws on the available translated material and on the general principles of Globa’s system as they have been communicated through the international astrological community.

Astronomical Basis #

Every elliptical orbit has two focal points. For the Moon’s orbit around the Earth, one focal point is occupied by the Earth itself. The other is empty — a geometric point in space with no physical body at its location.

In Globa’s system, the lunar apogee (the point where the Moon is farthest from Earth) corresponds to Black Moon Lilith — more precisely, to the “mean” or “true” Lilith depending on the calculation method used. This is the better-known point, widely adopted in Western astrology since the mid-twentieth century.

The second focal point of the lunar ellipse — the empty focus opposite to Earth — is what Globa identifies as White Moon Selena. This point moves through the zodiac with a cycle of approximately seven years, considerably slower than Lilith’s approximately nine-year cycle. The two points are geometrically related but not diametrically opposite in the zodiac; their positions depend on the eccentricity and orientation of the lunar orbit at any given time.

The calculation of Selena is more complex than a simple opposition to Lilith. It requires computing the position of the empty focus of the lunar orbital ellipse, which involves the eccentricity of the orbit, the position of the apsidal line (the line connecting perigee and apogee), and the geometry of elliptical orbits. Several Russian astrological software programs include Selena; in Western software, it is less commonly available, though some programs offer it as an optional point.

Selena vs. Priapus — A Necessary Distinction #

Confusion frequently arises between White Moon Selena and the point sometimes called Priapus (or Priapus-Selena), which is the lunar perigee — the point where the Moon is closest to Earth.

These are different points with different astronomical bases and different interpretive traditions.

Lilith (Black Moon) = Lunar apogee (farthest point from Earth) Priapus = Lunar perigee (closest point to Earth) White Moon Selena = Second focal point of the lunar orbital ellipse

Priapus is the geometric complement of Lilith along the apsidal axis — it sits directly opposite Lilith. Selena, by contrast, is the complement of the Earth’s position within the ellipse — a fundamentally different geometric relationship. The fact that some astrological sources use “Selena” and “Priapus” interchangeably has created persistent confusion, particularly in English-language discussions where the Russian source material is not readily available.

When working with Selena, it is essential to verify which calculation the software is using. If the program simply places a point opposite to Lilith, it is computing Priapus, not Selena. True Selena requires the computation of the empty focal point, which produces a different zodiacal longitude.

The Archetypal Meaning #

Within Globa’s framework, Selena represents the individual’s connection to constructive processes — the psychological territory where their natural instincts align with developmental movement rather than repetitive patterns or defensive reactions.

This is not the same as ease or comfort. Selena does not promise that the area of life it occupies will be free of difficulty. Rather, it suggests that in this domain, the individual’s natural responses tend to be oriented toward integration and growth rather than toward automatic defensive patterns. It is the area where saying “yes” to one’s instincts is most likely to produce genuinely constructive outcomes.

In practice, Selena’s sign and house placement often describe a quality and a life area where the individual has a kind of quiet competence — an ability to navigate challenges with a natural fluency that they may not fully recognize in themselves. Others may notice this competence before the individual does. The person with Selena in the tenth house, for instance, may handle professional responsibilities with a natural authority that seems effortless from the outside, even if it does not feel effortless from within.

The distinction from Lilith is illuminating. Where Lilith reveals the territory of raw instinct, autonomy, and the psychological material that resists socialization, Selena reveals the territory where instinct and constructive social function naturally converge. Lilith asks: What do I need that I have been taught to suppress? Selena asks: Where does my natural direction align with genuine growth?

The Seven-Year Cycle #

Selena moves through the zodiac in approximately seven years, spending roughly seven months in each sign. This cycle is significantly slower than the Moon’s monthly cycle and slower than Lilith’s roughly nine-year cycle (though Lilith’s progression through the zodiac is retrograde, moving backward through the signs).

The seven-year cycle has its own developmental rhythm. When transiting Selena returns to its natal position (the Selena return, occurring approximately every seven years), the individual enters a period where the themes associated with their natal Selena are renewed and refreshed. This can manifest as a period of natural clarity about one’s direction, a sense of alignment between internal motivation and external circumstances, or the emergence of opportunities that feel unusually congruent with one’s actual needs.

Globa’s system places significant emphasis on this seven-year cycle as a rhythm of renewal within the broader developmental arc. The first return (around age 7) coincides with the developmental milestone of early childhood’s end. The second (around age 14) corresponds to adolescence. The third (around age 21) marks early adulthood. Each return is an opportunity to reconnect with the constructive direction that Selena represents — not because the return causes this reconnection, but because the cycle creates a natural rhythm of self-assessment and realignment.

Selena and Lilith as Complementary Poles #

In the Russian system, Selena and Lilith are not opposites in the sense that one is desirable and the other is not. They are complementary functions within the psyche — two orientations that both serve the individual’s development when properly integrated.

Lilith reveals what the psyche needs in its rawest form — the desires, drives, and autonomy requirements that exist prior to socialization and may conflict with conventional expectations. This material is essential. Without access to Lilith’s territory, the individual is cut off from their authentic instinctual life and operates entirely on the basis of learned responses.

Selena reveals where instinct and constructive direction naturally coincide — the territory where doing what comes naturally also serves the individual’s genuine growth. This is not the absence of Lilith’s intensity; it is a different axis of experience. Selena answers the question Lilith raises: If my raw instincts need expression, where can they express in a way that builds rather than disrupts?

The most integrated expression of these two points involves honoring both. The individual who has access to Lilith knows what they need; the individual who has access to Selena knows where that need can be channeled constructively. The challenge is not choosing one over the other but finding the dynamic balance between them — a balance that shifts with circumstances, maturation, and the ongoing process of self-understanding.

Working With Selena in the Chart #

To work with Selena in the natal chart, locate the point by sign and house. The sign describes the quality of the natural alignment — the style through which constructive instincts express. The house describes the area of life where this alignment is most evident.

The articles that follow in this series explore Selena’s meaning through each of the twelve signs and twelve houses, offering detailed interpretations of how this natural alignment manifests in different psychological and practical domains.

When interpreting Selena, keep several principles in mind. First, this is a supplementary point, not a replacement for the core chart factors (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, planetary placements and aspects). It adds a layer of nuance, particularly for individuals interested in identifying areas of natural constructive alignment. Second, the concept originates in a specific tradition with its own philosophical assumptions; the interpretations offered here aim to translate those assumptions into the archetypal, growth-oriented language used throughout this site. Third, as with any calculated point, the quality of interpretation depends on the quality of the astronomical calculation — verify that your software is computing the true Selena (empty focus of the lunar ellipse) rather than Priapus.

Guiding Questions #

  • Where in your life do your natural instincts tend to produce outcomes that genuinely serve your growth, without requiring extensive deliberation or course-correction?

  • How do you experience the relationship between the areas of life where you feel most instinctually autonomous (Lilith territory) and the areas where your instincts align most naturally with constructive outcomes (Selena territory)?

  • The seven-year Selena cycle suggests periodic renewals of constructive alignment. Looking back at your life in roughly seven-year intervals, do you notice recurring moments of clarity about your direction?

  • How does learning that Selena originates in the Russian astrological tradition affect your relationship with the concept? Does the cultural specificity of an astrological technique change how you evaluate its usefulness?
