Rectification Case Studies: The General Approach #
Step One: Gathering Evidence #
A typical rectification begins with the collection of precisely dated life events – career changes, marriages, relocations, births, losses, health events, educational milestones, and other clear transitions. The more events provided with exact dates, the more discriminating the rectification can be. Events with clear planetary signatures (a sudden relocation = Uranus, a period of illness = Saturn or the sixth house) are most useful.
Step Two: Establishing the Range #
The astrologer establishes the approximate birth time range from whatever information is available – family memory, birth certificate times (which may be rounded), hospital records, or general recollection (“early morning,” “after dinner”). This range determines how many candidate birth times need to be tested. A two-hour range requires testing approximately 30 candidate times at four-minute intervals.
Step Three: Testing Multiple Methods #
For each candidate birth time, the astrologer tests:
Transits to angles: When would outer planets have crossed the Ascendant and Midheaven? Do these dates match known life transitions?
Progressed angles: When would the progressed MC have contacted natal planets? Do these contacts explain the timing of known events?
Solar arcs: Do solar arc directions to the angles and from the angles to natal planets correlate with the event list?
Primary directions: Do directed contacts between planets and angles match the chronology of major life events?
Step Four: Convergence #
The birth time that produces the most consistent correlations across all methods is adopted as the working hypothesis. No single method is considered definitive – it is the convergence of independent evidence that produces genuine confidence. Three methods agreeing on the same four-minute window provides substantially more confidence than one method alone.
Step Five: Validation #
The proposed birth time is validated by testing it against events that were not used in the initial rectification. If the proposed time accurately predicts the timing of additional events, the rectification gains further confidence.
