Which Lilith Should You Use? Black Moon, Asteroid & Dark Moon Compared #
The name Lilith appears in astrology in at least three distinct forms, each calculated differently and carrying a different interpretive emphasis. Confusion between these forms is one of the most common sources of error in chart analysis. This article distinguishes the three Liliths, explains what each represents, and offers guidance on when each is most useful.
The Three Liliths #
1. Black Moon Lilith (Mean or True) #
Black Moon Lilith is the most widely used form in modern astrology. It is not a physical body but a calculated point — specifically, the lunar apogee, the point in the Moon’s orbit that is farthest from Earth.
Because the Moon’s orbit is elliptical and its apogee shifts over time, there are two versions:
- Mean Lilith uses the averaged, smoothed orbital path, producing a position that moves steadily through the zodiac at approximately 40° per year. This is the version found in most software defaults and ephemerides.
- True (Osculating) Lilith uses the actual, unsmoothed orbital path, which wobbles significantly — sometimes retrograding, sometimes jumping forward by several degrees in a single day. This version is more astronomically precise but harder to track and interpret.
Most practitioners use Mean Lilith for natal interpretation because of its stability; True Lilith is sometimes preferred for precise timing work or for charts where the difference between the two positions is large enough to change the sign placement.
What it represents: Black Moon Lilith describes the instinctive, unedited, raw dimension of experience — the desires, reactions, and self-expressions that a person may suppress, disown, or express impulsively because they fall outside what feels socially acceptable. It points to where instinctive authenticity meets socialized self-censorship.
2. Asteroid Lilith (1181) #
Asteroid 1181 Lilith is a physical body — a minor planet orbiting in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, discovered in 1927. Its orbital period is approximately 4 years, placing it in a given sign for several months at a time.
What it represents: Asteroid Lilith tends to manifest at a more concrete, behavioral level than Black Moon Lilith. Where Black Moon Lilith describes an internal tension between instinct and socialization, Asteroid Lilith describes how that tension plays out in specific actions, choices, and relational patterns. It is often associated with issues of equality, independence, and the refusal to subordinate personal authenticity to external expectations — particularly in interpersonal dynamics.
3. Dark Moon Lilith (Waldemath) #
Dark Moon Lilith is based on a hypothetical second moon of Earth, proposed by the astronomer Georg Waldemath in 1898. Modern astronomy has not confirmed the existence of this body, and its use in astrology is niche. The point is calculated using a fixed orbital period and is included in some specialized software.
What it represents: Dark Moon Lilith is associated with the deepest, most hidden layer of the Lilith archetype — unconscious material, shadow projections, and the aspects of the self that are not merely suppressed but genuinely invisible to the conscious mind. It operates in the psychological basement: the place where unexamined assumptions, inherited taboos, and automatic patterns live.
Which Lilith to Use #
The choice depends on the type of analysis being performed:
For natal chart interpretation (most common use): Black Moon Lilith (Mean) is the standard starting point. It provides the broadest and most interpretively rich picture of the Lilith archetype in the chart.
For relational and behavioral analysis: Asteroid Lilith (1181) adds a concrete, action-level dimension. When examining how Lilith themes manifest in specific relationships, conflicts, or life choices, the asteroid’s position provides additional specificity.
For deep psychological work: Dark Moon Lilith (Waldemath) addresses the most unconscious layer. It is primarily used by practitioners working with shadow integration, depth psychology, or the examination of patterns the client cannot see.
In practice, many experienced astrologers use two or all three — beginning with Black Moon Lilith for the broad picture and adding Asteroid or Dark Moon Lilith when the chart or the client’s situation calls for additional precision.
The Liliths in Synastry and Transit #
In synastry, Black Moon Lilith contacts tend to describe areas of intense attraction and discomfort — where one person’s raw authenticity activates the other’s defenses. Asteroid Lilith contacts are often more behavioral — describing specific patterns of power negotiation between partners.
In transit, Black Moon Lilith transits tend to bring periodic confrontations with suppressed material. Asteroid Lilith transits are typically shorter and more event-focused — a specific situation that raises issues of autonomy, equality, or the refusal to accommodate at personal expense.
Reflective Prompts #
- Where is your Black Moon Lilith? Does it describe a pattern of suppression or impulsive expression that you recognize?
- Have you checked whether your Asteroid Lilith (1181) occupies a different sign or house, and does this add nuance?
- Is there an area of life where you consistently encounter the same challenge without understanding its source? Dark Moon Lilith may point to the root.
