Crop Planting Guide by the Moon #

Overview

This guide provides crop-specific lunar timing for the major plant families encountered in the home garden and small farm. Each entry synthesizes the lunar phase, zodiacal sign, and elemental principles into actionable recommendations for every stage of cultivation — from seed starting through harvest.

The fundamental rule across all crops: when variables conflict, prioritize the lunar phase over the zodiac sign, and prioritize terrestrial conditions (soil temperature, weather, frost dates) over all celestial timing.

Tomatoes and Peppers #

Elemental category: Fruit/Seed (Fire element)

Tomatoes and peppers present a unique profile — they require deep, consistent hydration for root and foliage establishment (Water element) but need warmth and concentrating energy to produce fruit (Fire element). The cultivation cycle navigates this tension by timing different stages to different elemental windows.

Seed starting: Waxing Moon, First Quarter phase. Best signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces (Water signs provide moisture for germination). Scorpio is traditionally considered the strongest placement for tomato seeds — the intensity and depth support a robust constitution. Alternative: Sagittarius, to encourage vigorous fruiting later.

Transplanting: Waxing Gibbous or just after First Quarter. Best signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. The water element supports hydration and root expansion during the vulnerable transition. Avoid transplanting during barren signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Aquarius), which lack the moisture for delicate root recovery.

Staking and training: Waning Moon, when sap is drawn downward and pruning cuts cause minimal stress. Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) provide structural emphasis.

Fertilizing: Liquid feeds (compost tea, fish emulsion) during waxing Moon in Water signs, when the plant actively draws moisture upward. Solid amendments during waning Moon in Earth signs, when the downward flow integrates heavier materials into the soil.

Pest management: Waning Moon in barren signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, Aquarius). The dry, inhospitable quality discourages pest proliferation.

Harvesting for fresh eating: Full Moon in Fire signs — maximum water content and expressive vitality produce peak flavor. Harvesting for canning/storage: Waning Moon in Earth or Fire signs — lower moisture content supports preservation.

Leafy Greens #

Elemental category: Leaf (Water element)

Lettuce, spinach, kale, chard, cabbage, and other greens are the quintessential Water-element crops. Their entire developmental trajectory — rapid germination, lush foliar expansion, tender texture — depends on abundant, steady moisture.

Seed starting and direct sowing: Waxing Moon, Waxing Crescent phase (the initial surge of upward moisture supports rapid germination and leaf production). Best signs: Cancer (maximum fertility and moisture), Scorpio (depth and pest resistance), Pisces (aromatic quality and abundance). Taurus is a strong alternative for heavy brassicas like cabbage that need structural stability.

Succession planting: Leafy greens benefit from repeated sowings at two-week intervals. Time each succession to a waxing Moon in a Water sign for consistent results throughout the growing season.

Harvesting for fresh use: Full Moon or Waxing Gibbous — leaves are fully turgid, crisp, and nutrient-dense. Harvesting for drying: Waning Moon in an Air sign (Gemini, Aquarius) — reduced moisture content supports dehydration.

Avoiding bolting: Leafy greens are particularly susceptible to premature bolting (rushing to seed) during Fire-sign transits, especially Aries. Avoid sowing during Fire signs, and provide shade and irrigation during hot Fire-sign days in summer.

Root Vegetables #

Elemental category: Root (Earth element)

Carrots, beets, potatoes, turnips, parsnips, radishes, and the allium family (onions, garlic, shallots) develop their primary yield below the soil surface. The fundamental timing principle: direct growth downward with both phase and element.

Planting: Waning Moon (downward moisture flow), ideally in Earth signs. Taurus provides the most fertile expression — heavy, substantial root development. Capricorn provides endurance and superior storage quality. Virgo supports precision but is less generative.

For potatoes: Plant seed potatoes during waning Moon in Taurus for maximum bulk, or Capricorn for long storage life. The dark, downward phase encourages tuber formation rather than excessive foliage.

For carrots and parsnips: Waning Moon in Taurus or Pisces. Pisces (a Water sign) is excellent for root vegetables despite being a “leaf” element — the deep moisture penetration supports long, straight taproot development. Avoid Aries and Leo, which dry the soil and produce forked, stunted roots.

For garlic: Plant cloves in autumn during waning Moon in Scorpio or Capricorn. The deep, resilient quality of Scorpio supports overwinter root establishment, while Capricorn ensures longevity and hardiness.

Harvesting for storage: Waning Moon in Earth signs (especially Capricorn). Crops pulled under this combination exhibit dense cellular structure, thick protective skins, and exceptional keeping quality. Allow root crops to cure in a warm, dry space for several days before moving to cold storage.

Legumes #

Elemental category: Fruit/Seed (Fire element — cultivated for pods and seeds)

Beans, peas, lentils, and other legumes occupy an interesting position: they fix nitrogen in the soil (an Earth function) but are harvested primarily for their seeds and pods (a Fire function). Their climbing, reaching growth habit also resonates with the Air element.

Planting: Waxing Moon, First Quarter phase. Best signs: Cancer or Scorpio (provides the moisture needed for germination and early establishment). Sagittarius is excellent for encouraging vigorous vine growth and abundant pod set. Gemini is a traditional exception — its dual, reaching archetype supports the climbing and tendril-producing habit of pole beans and peas.

Inoculation: If using rhizobium inoculant for nitrogen fixation, apply during a waning Moon in an Earth sign. The downward energy directs the bacteria into the root zone where they form nodules.

Harvesting green beans/peas for fresh eating: Full Moon or Waxing Gibbous. Harvesting dried beans for storage: Waning Moon in a Fire or Air sign — the dry conditions support thorough pod drying and prevent mold.

Culinary and Medicinal Herbs #

Elemental category: Variable — depends on the harvest goal

Herbs are the most elementally flexible crop category. The same plant may fall under different elemental classifications depending on which part is harvested:

  • Leaf herbs (basil, parsley, cilantro, mint) → Water element. Sow during waxing Moon in Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces. Pisces is particularly strong for aromatic herbs, enhancing essential oil development.
  • Flower herbs (chamomile, calendula, lavender, borage) → Air element. Sow during waxing Moon in Libra. Harvest blossoms on Air days (Gemini, Aquarius) for maximum fragrance retention and rapid drying.
  • Seed herbs (coriander seed, dill seed, fennel seed) → Fire element. Allow to mature and collect seeds during Fire-sign days for highest viability.
  • Root herbs (valerian, echinacea, ginger) → Earth element. Plant and harvest during waning Moon in Earth signs.

General harvesting principle for all herbs: Harvest in the morning after the dew has dried but before the midday heat depletes volatile oils. The Full Moon provides peak essential oil concentration for immediate use. Air-sign days provide the driest conditions for herbs intended for long-term drying and storage.

Cucurbits #

Elemental category: Fruit/Seed (Fire element)

Squash, pumpkins, melons, and cucumbers demand vast amounts of water and growing space. Their sprawling vines and heavy fruits require a generous start followed by concentrating energy for fruit maturation.

Planting: Waxing Moon, First Quarter. Best signs: Cancer or Scorpio for the heavy moisture needed during establishment. Sagittarius for encouraging extensive vine growth and abundant fruit set. Cucurbits need warm soil (above 15°C / 60°F) — never override this terrestrial requirement for the sake of a favorable lunar window.

Training and trellis work: Waning Moon in fixed signs for structural support.

Pollination support: Cucurbits require insect pollination. On Air-sign days, tend to pollinator habitat and observe whether flowers are being visited.

Harvesting summer squash and cucumbers: Frequently during waxing phase for tender, small fruit. Harvesting winter squash and pumpkins: Waning Moon in Earth or Fire signs for maximum storage life. Leave a portion of stem attached and cure in a warm, dry space for ten days before moving to cool storage.

Fruit Trees and Grapevines #

Elemental category: Fruit/Seed (Fire element) for the harvest; Root (Earth element) for establishment

Perennial crops operate on longer time scales than annuals, but lunar timing still applies to key interventions.

Planting new trees and vines: Descending Moon (sidereal cycle) combined with waning Moon in an Earth sign. The double downward impulse encourages rapid root establishment. Taurus provides robust foundational growth; Capricorn ensures long-term structural endurance. Scorpio provides deep resilience against environmental stress.

Dormant pruning: Waning Moon in winter, when sap is fully retreated. Earth or Air signs support clean healing of pruning cuts. Avoid pruning during the waxing phase or in Water signs — the rising sap causes excessive bleeding and increases vulnerability to infection.

Grafting: Waxing Moon, First Quarter or Waxing Gibbous. The strong upward sap flow facilitates the healing and integration of grafted tissues. Cancer or Taurus provides the moisture and cohesion for the cambium layers to bond.

Fruit harvest for fresh eating: Full Moon in Fire signs — maximum sugar concentration and flavor expression. Fruit harvest for preserving: Waning Moon in Fire or Earth signs — lower moisture supports canning, drying, and storage.

Grapevine timing: Grapes require particular attention to the ascending/descending cycle used in biodynamic practice. Pruning during the descending Moon directs energy into the root system. Harvesting during the ascending Moon (especially in Fire signs) concentrates sugars in the fruit — a consideration relevant to winemaking quality.

Flowers and Ornamentals #

Elemental category: Flower (Air element)

The cultivation of flowers follows the Air-element framework, with Venus-ruled Libra as the premier planting sign.

Planting annuals and perennials: Waxing Moon in Libra — the cardinal Air sign, semi-fertile through Venus, produces the most vibrant, well-proportioned blooms. For perennials requiring deep establishment, waning Moon in Taurus provides stable rooting alongside Venusian aesthetic quality.

Planting bulbs: Waning Moon in Earth signs. Tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and other bulbs develop below ground and respond to the same timing as root crops. Capricorn is ideal for autumn bulb planting, conferring winter hardiness.

Pruning for bloom: Air-sign days, to direct the plant’s future growth toward flowering wood rather than excessive foliage.

Cutting flowers: Full Moon for immediate display (maximum turgidity and color). Air-sign days for drying — the reduced moisture ensures vivid color retention and structural integrity.

Roses: A Venusian crop par excellence. Plant during waxing Moon in Taurus (for root strength) or Libra (for bloom quality). Prune during waning Moon in late winter. Feed with liquid fertilizer during waxing Moon in Water signs.
